Counter-Strike 2 is distributed only through Steam. Avoid any third-party “installer” or “loader” site — these are never official and are a common way to pick up malware.

Step 1: Install Steam

If you don’t already have it, download Steam from the official Steam website and run the installer. Create a free Steam account if you don’t have one.

Step 2: Find and install Counter-Strike 2

In the Steam store, search for “Counter-Strike 2” and click Install. Steam will download the game to your default library folder — you can change this location in Steam’s settings if you want it on a different drive before the download starts.

Step 3: Let Steam finish verifying files

After the download completes, Steam automatically verifies the installation. Don’t interrupt this step even though the game may appear to be ready — an incomplete verification is a common cause of launch crashes.

Step 4: First-launch settings worth checking

Before jumping into a match:

  • Video settings — set your resolution to your monitor’s native resolution and try Fullscreen or Borderless Windowed Fullscreen depending on whether you alt-tab often.
  • Launch options (Properties → General → Launch Options in Steam) — most players don’t need any, but -novid skips the intro video if you want faster launches.
  • Network settings — CS2 will auto-detect a reasonable rate/tickrate setup on official Valve servers; you don’t need to manually tune these unless you’re playing exclusively on community servers.

If the game won’t launch

Right-click Counter-Strike 2 in your Steam library, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files. This catches the majority of launch failures caused by a corrupted or interrupted download.
